We had a small sample piece of granite from a remodel project we did a few years ago. This piece of granite sat on our counter, but we couldn’t quite figure out what to do with it. There was writing on the side, so it pretty much just sat there. We tried a few ideas – a trivet, a platform to hold something, I don’t know. Then, when shopping a few days ago, an idea came to me. A small, cute little tray. Craft challenge accepted.

Piece of granite, meet twine. Twine, meet piece of granite. With a little hot glue, I attempted adding handles first. Turns out, that wasn’t the way to go, the wrap around the base wouldn’t lay very nicely that way. Miss fire. It’s ok, I rebounded pretty quickly. I started at a bottom corner and hot glued the end of the twine down. I continued a string of glue across the bottom edge. Then, I laid twine on top and pushed it down while the glue cooled. I continued along each edge. When I returned to the starting point, I moved up to a second layer. I kept wrapping the twine around-and-around until I got all the way to the top edge of the granite piece.

The end of the twine needed a little bit of hot glue to hold it down. This prevented the edges from fraying apart. I still really wanted to add handles to the tray. I cut a piece of twine long enough for a handle, then cut a duplicate piece (for the other side). To help the handles blend into the design, I started the twine at the bottom of the granite. I glued each end down. Running hot glue up the side of the tray, pressing the twine into place on one side. I repeated on the other side to finish the first handle. Repeat again on the other end of the tray.

The little tray turned out really cute and works awesome to hold a couple of candles.
